The Recording Environment

The preferred environment for EVP recording can be any residence or building -- historical or not -- where the background ambient noise level is low.  This means that, if possible, no noise-producing devices should be active during the recording session such as heating or cooling equipment, constantly running water, electric fans, refrigerators, televisions, radios, other people speaking, pets in the area, neighbors making sounds, etc.

Where some noise remains audible one must be able to identify all natural sources of audio contamination so that a distinction can be drawn between normal and paranormal sounds.

When investigators choose to speak during a recording session, they should speak in an out loud, normal voice and not a whisper as the whispering sounds of a living human being can be mistaken for EVP.  It is good to speak slowly and clearly and to leave pauses after asking questions or making comments.  EVP will oftentimes occur soon after a living human speaks as if in response.

It is not recommended to do outdoor recording since the amount of noise contamination from unidentifiable sources cannot be controlled.  Cemeteries, for example, make poor recording environments  and it should also be understood that nonphysical beings (spirits) seem to prefer the presence of living human beings and not slowly decaying embalmed corpses.  Spirits seem to be drawn to life and not to death.

On the other hand, a building or residence that has seen a great deal of living would be an excellent location for EVP recording even if the location has been abandoned for some time.

Try to avoid areas of strong electromagnetic interference, power relay stations, high tension power lines, broadcast towers, etc.

Use the best quality digital voice recorder that one can afford and acquire computer audio editing software to analyze the recordings fully.  Good quality stereo headphones are considered essential to hear the full fidelity of recordings.

On the morning of March 23, 2009, while the recorder was running, the investigator looked outside his kitchen window and said, "Frodo's outside," and then jokingly turned to a dog inside and added, "She says I knows," guessing what the dog might be thinking.

After a pause, a new voice is heard to whisper, "She says he thinks it's something outside."  The whisper is quite in the high frequency range, between 4000 and 8000 Hz, something that would be acoustically abnormal for an entire utterance of that duration and mix of vowels and consonant sounds.

If this is indeed a paranormal voice making a comment -- a comment that was not heard audibly by the investigator -- it suggests again that at least some of these nonphysical beings have a moment-by-moment, real-time awareness of living human beings in the physical environment.

Using a new recorder, the Zoom H2, some other EVP were recorded.  All digital voice recorders seem capable of capturing paranormal utterances, but high quality recorders are considered optimum.

It is noted that some persons doing EVP research will recommend using low-quality voice recorders with a high noise-floor and a great deal of internal noise.  This type of recording method, of course, only emphasizes inaccuracy and misinterpretation of normal sounds as paranormal voices.  In addition, recording noise sources like radio static or rapidly-scanned fragments of radio broadcast or even voice synthesis phonemes only produces varying amounts of sound which will usually be misinterpreted as "spirit voices."

On September 12, 2009, two very unusual paranormal utterances were recorded during the same EVP session.

The first sample is the longest continuous voice ever recorded by this investigator.  It appears to be a woman speaking but her words are completely unintelligible until the very end when an unidentified snap is heard and the voice suddenly comes in clearly saying, "Who is it?"

At one point in the clip, a nasal-sounding man's voice seems to respond to the woman speaking.  (A dog bark can be heard near the beginning of the clip.)

The investigator was outside the house in the yard when this was recorded.

Shortly after this utterance was recorded, one of the strangest voice captures ever heard occurred.  Initially, an unidentified rumble similar to tympani is heard followed by a voice speaking in an unidentified language.

Again using the Zoom H2 recorder during the nights of November 18, 2009, and January 17, 2010, while the investigator was sleeping, two strange utterances were recorded.  In both of the recordings, the ticking of the clock above the fireplace can clearly be heard.

It is not known why but it does seem that nonphysical beings generally prefer the presence of awake and active living human beings, although on very rare occasions if the recorder is placed adjacent to the bedroom of a sleeping person, a voice may be captured.

In the first recording, what appears to be a soft female voice begins to speak, but the words are unintelligible.  The last word seems to clear up a bit and may be, "... cry."

In the second recording, it seems another female voice speaks but none of the words are intelligible.  Whatever this voice is saying, it is spacing out the words for some unknown reason.

Returning to the use of the Olympus DS-40 recorder on November 23, 2009, an unusual voice was recording during the morning hours.

The voice was neither responsive nor observational, but simply spoke out for unknown reasons.  The investigator was at the far end of the house away from the recorder when this was recorded.

This deep-sounding voice may have said, "And nobody that (has) heard of that."  As so often happens with EVP captures, the spoken words are simple but the meaning is cryptic and obscure.  It is as if you only hear a portion of one side of a conversation.
